Description:
The Lucia Widow (Palpopleura Lucia) is a rather small dragonfly that occurs throughout Tropical Africa.
While the male has a powdery blue body, the female is yellowish-brown.
Palpopleura Lucia looks very similar to the Portia Widow (Palpopleura portia).
It was previously thought that the two were the same species, but modern research has shown that they are in fact two separate species.
The males are quite easily distinguished by the extent and shape of the distinctive dark wing markings.
Females of the two species, however, are very difficult to distinguish one from the other, if not impossible.
The genus Palpopleura, generally known as Widows, consists of seven species: five species occur in Africa, one in Madagascar and one in southern Asia.
All species are very to fairly small (hindwing 15-29 mm) with a short and broad abdomen; the females all have a characteristic pattern of three black and four yellow stripes.
