Speckled Wood

Description:

The island of Madeira is home to two species of Speckled Wood Butterfly.
The very similar Madeiran Speckled Wood (Pararge xiphia), which I unfortunately didn't see and which is significantly larger than the Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria), is endemic to Madeira and is common at mid to high altitudes, within and around the edges of the indigenous Laurel Forest.
Parage aegeria was first recorded on Madeira in 1976 and may be responsible for the decline of Pararge xiphia.
