Monarch Butterfly

Description:

The Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is nearly identical to the Southern Monarch Butterfly (Danaus erippus), which latter one until 2007 was regarded as a subspecies of Danaus plexippus.
Danaus erippus usually has an orange trailing edge of the forewings, while in Danaus plexippus it is black.
The distribution of Danaus plexippus ranges from southern Canada to central South America.
Danaus erippus is only found south of the Andes.
