Description:

The pale blue eyespots on the forewing are distinctive on this large (wingspan: 54–70 mm) dark butterfly.
Other similar looking butterflies have white eyespots. 
Females are usually considerably larger than the males.
This species can be found in southern and central Europe up to central Asia and Japan.
