Bloody-nosed Beetle

Description:

The Bloody-nosed Beetle grows to 15-20 mm in length and looks somewhat like the more famous Dung Beetles (like this one).
Dung Beetles, however, have very short and thin antennae compared to the Bloody-nosed Beetle, which end in a conspicuously widened fan shape and are never made up of bead-like segments as is the case with the Bloody-nosed Beetle.
It also looks very similar to the Lesser Bloody-nosed Beetle (Timarcha goettingensis) but that one reaches only 8-11 mm in length.
The Bloody-nosed Beetle has a characteristic convex body shape and the body is black in color with a slightly iridescent sheen.
Also striking are the long legs, which makes the body stand high on the legs.
The dorsal shields are intertwined and it cannot fly.
The Bloody-nosed Beetle is found in parts of central and southern Europe.
The species is rare in Belgium and the Netherlands.
