Asian Elephant

Description:

Asian Elephants are smaller than African Elephants and their ears are much smaller (and rounder).
The ears of the African Elephant reach up and over the neck, which does not occur in Asian Elephants.
Both male and female African Elephants can have tusks, while only male Asian Elephants can grow them.

The Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) has three subspecies:
1. Elephas maximus maximus from Sri Lanka (Sri Lankan Elephant),
2. Elephas maximus indicus from mainland Asia (Indian Elephant), and
3. Elephas maximus sumatranus from the island of Sumatra (Sumatran elephant).

The Sri Lankan Elephant is the largest of the three subspecies and its skin color is darker.
